Thousands of Acres of Saline County Becomes a Defense Area

This map accurately shows the outlines of both the new army air base, now under construction two miles southwest of Salina and the new army cantonment in southwest Saline county. The arrow in lower left hand corner shows the direction and distance to the big Smoky Hill dam. Condemnation proceedings on the entire 41,704 acre cantonment area were filed in federal court at Topeka Friday by Paul L. Aylward, special U. S. district attorney, but so far the court has issued orders giving the government possession only of the housing area just northwest of Smolan. The map was drawn according to legal descriptions shown on the actual court petition filed in Topeka and is therefore know whether the boundaries of the reservation will include their farms. Because of this, and because the national press censor has ruled that court proceedings are privileged for publication, this map is being made public.
