VETERANS OF FIRST WORLD
WAR REGISTER NEXT WEEK

Departure of National Guard Men
Occasions New Move For
Protection

Next week veterans of the first World war will register again in Salina. This time they will write their names as volunteers for home guard duty.

Registration headquarters will be 113 West Iron, where Herman R. Anderson will be in charge from 1 to 5 oclock each afternoon. Men who register there will be offering their services in case of local emergency only, it was announced today by officers of the American Legion, which is taking charge of the registration week for which Gov. Payne Ratner issued a proclamation to all of Kansas, setting the deadline for such home guard registration as February 22. Men who register will be veterans of the first World war, whether members of the legion, of some other military group, or of no organized group at all, and they will be allowed to sign blanks specifying in what kind of work they prefer to be summoned to duty in case of emergency, whether as police, fire squad members, or some other line of service.

The removal of National Guard men to camp, leaving communities over the state unprotected, is the occasion of this registration for service as home guardsmen, a type of protection similar to that which has so forcefully fortified England.
