LOWRY EXPANSION OUTSTRIPS SCHEDULE

PRESENT JOBS
TO BE WOUND
UP BY JAN. 1

Bids Will Be Asked
Tuesday for 100
New Buildings

New permanent construction at Lowry field is proceeding so rapidly that virtually all the present jobs under contract, totaling more than 3 million dollars, should be complete by Jan. 1, 1941, Lieut. Col. Carl H. Jabelonsky, constructing quartermaster, said Thursday.

Colonel Jabelonsky said he is highly pleased over the way the contractors are speeding up their jobs because of the army expansion program. He declared all the projects were "well ahead of schedule."

Most rapid of all is construction of the new 300-foot-square hangar, which will cost approximately $434,000.

Colonel Jabelonsky said this work is about 70 per cent complete and probably would be finished within another month. The contract does not require completion until Jan. 21, 1941.

BARRACKS MUST BE
FINISHED BY DEC. 28.

The giant barracks buildings, which will accommodate 1,880 soldiers, must be finished by Dec. 28 but the constructing quartermaster said this building is fast nearing completion and will be ready much in advance of this time.

Built of cream-colored brick, the same as all other new buildings on the reservation, the barracks will cost in excess of 2 million dollars.

The central heating plant, built at a cost of more than $400,000, is not scheduled by contract to be finished before Nov. 19, but will be in operation late this month, Colonel Jabelonsky said. Nearly all steam transmission lines, costing about $100,000, have been laid.

On the heating plant a double shift has been used for several months.

CONCRETE BEING
POURED FOR RUNWAY.

Pouring concrete for the 150-foot-wide extension of the north-south runway was begun Wednesday. This and the paving of the mile-long east-west runway will be completed within forty-five days, altho the contract does not call for completion for nearly ninety days.

An air corps warehouse to cost in excess of $100,000 is 60 per cent complete, altho the completion deadline is Jan. 21.

Colonel Jabelonsky announced a radio transmitter building, east of the field, has just been completed.

FORMS BEING LAID
FOR $400,000 SCHOOL

Also running ahead of schedule in construction is the communications building.

Forms were being laid Thursday for the foundation of the new $400,000 school building. This building should be completed early next year.

Meantime, Colonel Jabelonsky said he is prepared to receive bids next Tuesday for 100 new temporary buildings, to cost one and one-fourth million dollars, to take care of increased numbers of soldiers at Lowry field.

These new buildings will include fifty barracks, school buildings, mess hall, creation rooms and kitchens. All must be completed by the first of the new year under war department orders.

To carry out this mass building program Colonel Jabelonsky said virtually every available worker in Denver probably would be pressed into employment.
