This photo of a crumbling barn and house was taken in "Post Rock Country" a few miles west of Beloit, Kansas. Because of a lack of native trees, early settlers in this area quarried a thin bed of relatively soft limestone and split it for fence posts. The same stone was also used for farm buildings and homes.
