Volland, Kansas, which is located several miles west of Alma, Kansas was originally Grafton, Kansas (on paper) and renamed in 1888. It was primarily a ranching community located adjacent to a railroad. Cattle were shipped in from Texas and unloaded at a stock yard near Volland to replenish them with water and feed. This building is believed to have been a newer local grocery store constructed in the early 1900's.
